Message of Peace to post-quake Istanbul

The Zawisza Czarny arrived in Istanbul at 1230 (local time) at the Marina, where it will make a three-day port of call before leaving again on 11 September for Thessaloniki and Piraeus. The third Leg of the Peace Cruise thus draws to a close at the gateway of Europe, having left Antalya on 1 September and visited Rhodes on 4 September.

The 28 Peace Sailors from 15 Mediterranean countries will hand over the baton to 26 new Peace Sailors from 13 countries, during a Peace Event on Friday 10 September at 1800 hrs at the Istanbul Olympic House.

During this event they will present the bust of Zenon to the city council of Istanbul. Offered by the town council of Larnaca (Cyprus), this symbol is accompanied by a message of peace and friendship.

The organisers expressed their satisfaction at having been able to involve Turkish and Cypriot youth organisations in the project and thanked the authorities who had given them permission to sail the Zawisza Czarny from Limassol to Antalya without having to make a stop.

The Peace Sailors will meet Turkish youth organisations at a Round Table at the Istanbul Olympic House on Friday 10 September, from 1600 to 1745 hrs (local time), to deepen the role of youth organisations in promoting peace and reconciliation. They will also have a discussion on their organisations' role in tackling humanitarian emergencies. This same theme will be discussed in Athens on 22 September, when the Peace Cruise draws to a close, as a gesture of solidarity with the earthquake victims in these two large cities chosen as ports of call by the Peace Cruise.
