On the September 14th. 1989, Federico Mayor, the Director General of Unesco, launched the International Year for the Culture of Peace from the Unesco headquarters in Paris. The same day, the Peace Sailors delivered their declaration live to Federico Mayor via a duplex system set up between the Unesco headquarters and Thessalonica.

At the close of a one hour conversation, the Director General named them the "Peace Ambassadors", assigning them the task of bringing a message of love and hope to those around them.
