I. The Peace Cruise as a lived experience
I.1. Peace Sailors had different feelings at different moments during the Peace Cruise. You will read what some of your fellow Sailors from all four legs wrote in the Logbook. After reading them, tell us what you think and feel.
I.11. "The Peace Cruise was a real challenge to me" :Why?
For who and how?
I.12. "We¹re all Peace Sailors now!"
I.13. "We have to think about tomorrow and how to pass on the message of peace in our hearts to others."
I.2. Some Peace Sailors loved to see the sun rise and set, or they liked the colours in the sky and water.
I.21. Do beautiful sights have a relationship to peace for you? How?
I.3. The next questions are about living with other people from different countries.
I.31. What do you think is the strongest thing about a Peace Cruise. Is it living with people from different cultures, different languages and different religions or is it working together, singing and dancing together, eating together? Is it feeling how different we all are or how much we are all alike? Is it something else to you? Tell us!
I.32. In the Logbook, you say that you started to feel like one big team after awhile.
I.33. The next questions are about
how this "team feeling" from the Peace Cruise changed you.
I.4. The Peace Cruise is all over now.
The Zawisza Czarny Ship for peace
II.1. Living on a ship seemed a new experience for most Peace Sailors. Apart from the partying and swimming, life on a ship was different in other ways: limited ever-tilting living space, seasickness, sailors¹ chores and 24hour duty.
II.11. Did living on a ship for ten days change something in how you get along with others anywhere and everywhere? How and why?
II.12. What
did living on a ship teach you about (1) respect for others? (2) listening and
paying attention to others? helping others? (3) being patient with others? (4)
competing with others? (5) recognising your own strengths and weaknesses, as
well as those of others?
II.13. Did it feel natural or irritating to take orders from the captain or
other people on the ship? Why?
II.14. Did you feel any change of attitude or personal values at any time during
the cruise?
II.14. Of all the things you remember, what do you think is/are the most valuable for creating an environment of peace that will prevent or stop conflicts? Why?
The Cities and Islands Visited during the Peace Cruise
III.1. The Peace Cruise stopped in places rich in myths and legends. The area is also geo-politically sensitive:
III.11. How did these places and their atmosphere make you feel? Tell us!
III.12. What made the strongest impression
on you? Why?
III.13. What is the significance
to the Peace Cruise stopovers and the places you visited?
III.2. In light of your ethnic origin and native country and culture, please tell what you were hoping to discover from places that you may or may not have even heard of?
III.3. Are there other parts of the world that need a Peace Cruise as much as the Middle East? Or even more? Why?
The Peace Events:
IV.1. The Peace Events added a lot of feelings to those that come from discovering new places. There were youths and students from scouting and other organisations, senior diplomats, political leaders, speeches and debates on peace, welcoming receptions, with much official recognition and encouragement for Peace Sailors. This enhances the public profile of the Peace Cruise.
IV.11. Tell us what you felt in those
moments.
IV.12. To underline the meaning of the Peace Cruise, the busts of Tutankhamon and Zenon, the UNESCO flag and the Peace Sailors uniforms were passed on from leg to leg all the way to their final destinations, along with a copy of the Peace Sailors¹ Declaration.
IV.13. More broadly, what political or diplomatic impact do you think the Peace events can have on peace?
IV.14. What have you actually produced through your participation in the Peace Cruise?
IV.15. Was it a good idea to hold these peace events? Why?
IV.16. What did you get out of meeting new people ashore?
Politics and Diplomacy and the Peace Cruise:
V.1. Maybe you personally saw difficult situations during the Cruise and how people solved them by talking to each other. For example, the Peace Cruise organisers had experienced difficulties while harbouring in the Gaza¹s port and in Beirut. They themselves used negotiations to execute the trip as planned. There were also delays due to passport and customs formalities which can be seen as a limit on free circulation of people and ideas. In fact, some formalities prevented some people from joining the Peace Cruise.
V.11. What conclusions have you drawn about all of these situations that include negotiations and mediations? Tell us
V.12. Do you feel the ban on travel to Beirut or to Gaza Strip was the best answer? How and why?
V.13. What skills are needed in this kind of situation and what is the best attitude to take? Give examples.
The Peace Sailor Training Programme
VI.1.
VI.11. After your leg, maybe you organised a peace event or worked on your communication skills, e.g. prejudices and stereotypes that needed to be overcome, sources of conflict and understanding them, conflict charting and its key phases, cross-cultural relations and bridging, prevention and resolution of conflicts. What have you worked on most? Where and who with? How did you approach it? Tell us!
VI.12. Do you feel that you are now able to serve as a negotiator or mediator in a conflict, lead a working group, group of visitors or give training? What diplomatic skills have you picked up? Tell us!
VI.2. Would you stand on the side of peace in a conflict, willingly or not, in good conscience or not? Tell us!
VI.21. What does it mean to you personally to stand on the side of peace?
VI.3. Have you felt like a Peace Sailor since the Peace Cruise? Tell us where and when!
