The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe was established in Lisbon in May 1990 as a result of the 1988 North-South Campaign conducted by the Council of Europe, in close co-operation with the European Union, in an effort to raise European public awareness on the many relations and complex links between Europe and the continents of the South : Africa, Asia and Latin America.

What are with objectives of the North-South Centre?

The aims of the North-South Centre are to provide a framework for european co-operation in raising public awareness on global interdependence issues and to promote policies of solidarity in conformity with the aims and principles of the Council of Europe : upholding human rights, seeking solutions to the problems facing society, and developping political partnerships with the new European democracies.

What are the main programmes of the North-South Centre?

  1. Public information and media relations
    This programme emphasizes co-operation with the media, helps to counteract Northern prejudices against the South, and encourages analysis of development information through its publications and documentation policy. It also organises meetings between journalists from both North and South, and between representatives of society at large.
     
  2. Global education and Youth
    The Global Education Programme aims to complement existing projects and activities, and to identify and pool the resources, experience, and expertise available in different countries in the area of global education. It also works to stimulate the development and ongoing exchange of innovative ideas and methods.

    The North-South Centres Youth Programme seeks to enhance the role played by young people in the field of North-South interdependence by setting up and consolidating youth organisations, and establish networks.
     
  3. Dialogue for global partnership
    The North-South Centre endeavours to raise Europeans awareness and to encourage dialogue between partners from both North and South in a number of fields : human rights and the promotion of peace, intercultural dialogue, decentralised dialogue.Trans-mediterranean Programme: Many activities focus on the Mediterranean region, in particular, aiming to contribute to better relations between the Northern and Southern shores of the Mediterranean in various areas : intercultural dialogue, communication and information, migration, youth and human rights.

What publications does the North-South Centre produce ?

The Interdependant, a monthly publication issued in French and English, is designed to promote the Centres activities and to provide an information forum for quadrilog members of the North and South. In co-operation with the Inter Press Service news agency, the North-South Centre also publishes Terra Viva Monthly in English, which is designed to provide a forum for representatives of the society at large and others partners in sustainable development, especially from the South, to express their views and concerns.
