Visit to the Pyramids : first conflict-solving practice...

"Well, the first day is gone and we are in the Sea Scout Centre in Alexandria East Harbour, trying to tell you how it was spent.

After a decent breakfast in the Scout Centre of the Arab Region, we left Cairo early at 8 a.m in the morning, as it was planned that we would go straight to Alexandria, where the Egyptians Sea Scouts were already awaiting us. But of course, we couldn't leave Cairo without having seen the Pyramids, even so, our training team was telling us that there was no time...The nicest thing of all was we had our first international communication with each over, and in this way our first conflict-solving practice, which finally led us to the Pyramids, showing our will to work and co-operate together for a fruitful Peace Cruise. In the late afternoon, after having settled down in the Sea Scout Centre in Alexandria, we started with the first training activities, focusing on getting  to know each other. It is already very clear that this is a very challenging project and will become an extraordinary experience with participants from 17 different countries of conflict areas.

Now it is 1 a.m. It is true that we are very tired, but we are going to take a nice walk on the beach. Even though the weather is almost too hot to work during the daytime, it is beautiful at night."

Discovering the Black Knight

"Hi everybody !

We can assure you all that we are having a very good time ! We had a good breakfast and a morning session on "Group Building" when the news came that our ship, the Black Knight, had just arrived in Alexandria Harbour. Since our accommodation, the Egyptian Sea Scout Centre, is located right at the port, we could just go out and saw it anchoring right in front of us. It was a beautiful view and we all felt that we can hardly wait until we finally start our cruise. But it will be three long more days!

Nevertheless our working session ended successfully and after lunch the Egyptian Scouts took us around in Alexandria on a sightseeing tour. To tell the truth, it was almost too hot, but we still could enjoy it. At night then, after dinner, we could join them in their rehearsal for the Peace Event on Sunday, and they showed us some Egyptian dances.

When we look out now at night in the harbour we can see the boat out there with its lights on. It is magnificent and our excitement grows, but also we are getting a little nervous about everything. We can't wait!"

7 August - In Alex, Our Third Day in Peace Cruise

"Salam, Shalom !

Our last participants from Spain and Palestine have just arrived, so the Peace Sailors group is now complete. This day has been an ordinary day. We played during the morning, dividing the group into  two sub-groups with two different behaviours and culture, unable to communicate in between them... It is called the Poco Poco Game ! We learned about our prejudices and stereotypes when having to face a different or foreign cultures. The afternoon session was an introduction to forms and styles of communication at personal and cultural levels."

8 August - The Peace Event

"This day has been really busy for the Egyptians ! They had to prepare our departure and to organise the Peace Event. We saw hundred of Scouts, students and other members of several youth organisations arriving from all Egypt to attend the Peace Event and express their farewell. It was also a busy day for us. We participated in our training session for elaborating our countribution to the Peace Event. A first group worked on our symbolic departure to the ship, a second one organised all the material for presenting the International Year of the Culture of Peace, and a last one prepared our visibility within the Peace Event.

The Peace Event itself was a great moment, with the participation of the Governor of Alexandria, the President of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Egyptian Parliament. The Governor has been a good supporter for supplying the ship in many kinds. Despite the long speeches it was an unforgettable celebration and a perfect start for the Peace Cruise. Finally we were formally congratulated and received the wishes of the Governor who adressed us on behalf of President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt."
